The Interior Designers of Alberta has four levels of Membership

Registered Member:
  • actively engaged in the interior design profession
  • degree or its equivalency which meets the minimum CIDA (formerly FIDER) a educational standards – See www.accredit-id.org for list of accredited programs
  • completed a minimum combination of seven years of education and practical training
  • successfully completed the NCIDQ examination.

A Provisional Member
  • degree or its equivalency which meets the minimum CIDA (formerly FIDER) a educational standards – See www.accredit-id.org for list of accredited programs
  • actively pursuing the experience and educational requirements of a Registered Interior Designer (i.e. completing work experience and preparing for NCIDQ)
  • Note Within two years of meeting these requirements, a Provisional member must make application for membership as a Registered Interior Designer.

Associate Member (formerly Para-professional)
  • actively engaged in that portion of the practice of interior design limited to the preparation of plans, drawings, specifications or graphic representations
  • has successfully completed a program of interior design recognized by Council (minimum 2 year full time program)
  • Note Associate Membership cannot be used as a route to Registered Membership. Associate Members who wish to pursue Registered Membership, must reapply as, and meet the educational requirements of, Provisional Members.

Student
  • enrolled in a post-secondary interior design program
  • Note Student Members must make application for Provisional or Associate level membership within nine months of graduation.

Membership Benefits
Professional develop and educational upgrading are offered on a regular basis in the form of seminars that award accredited continuing education units.

Two chapters within the IDA, North (Edmonton-based) and South (Calgary-based) that offer a series of educational and social gatherings for members.

Personal professional liability insurance program that offers third party coverage, with a limit of liability of $250,000 per occurrence; comprehensive general liability coverage arising from bodily injury, property damage, products and completed operations, employee benefits, non-owned automobile, tenants legal liability; professional errors and omissions coverage arising from errors or omissions in the performance of services as an interior designer with a $750,000 annual aggregate limit.

Reduced rates on automobile and home insurance

Membership in the Interior Designers of Canada that affords the following benefits
• being named in the Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government that allows IDA members to bid on federal government contracts;
• being included in the NAFTA agreement that provides reciprocity to interior designers to work within the United States;
• participation in NCIDQ and CIDA; bodies that set educational standards for the profession on a North America wide basis through national membership and board representation;
• liaison with the International Interior Design Federation;
• liaison with the Interior Design Education Council

Lobbying /liaison with the Government of the Province of Alberta in the areas of education and self-regulation;

Liaison with allied design and related professions within the Province of Alberta;

Publication of a provincial newsletter and membership directory

Liaison with interior design schools within the Province of Alberta; presentation of annual scholarships;

Membership Process
  Membership within the IDA is on an individual basis, not by firm. Any individual wishing to obtain membership with the IDA is required to submit a completed application form along with educational transcripts and references. Student applicants are not required to submit transcripts. The application is reviewed, transcripts are vetted and references checked prior to the application being submitted to the Registrar for final approval. Annual renewal requires proof of liability insurance coverage and fulfillment of currency and continuing education requirements.

Once a member of the IDA, professional development and educational upgrading are tracked and recorded on an annual basis to ensure that the designer is fulfilling the terms of membership.
