A Registered member is an interior designer who is actively engaged in the interior design profession; holds a degree or its equivalency which meets the minimum CIDA educational standards; has successfully completed a minimum combination of seven years of education and practical training, and has successfully completed the NCIDQ examination.
A Provisional member is an individual who has successfully completed a recognized program of interior design and who is actively pursuing the experience and educational requirements of a Registered Interior Designer. Within two years of meeting these requirements, the applicant must make application for membership as a Registered Interior Designer.
The other categories of membership are:
A Paraprofessional member is an interior designer who is actively engaged in that portion of the practice of interior design limited to the preparation of plans, drawings, specifications or graphic representations; has successfully completed a program of interior design; and has successfully completed a minimum combination of seven years of education and practical training.
A Student member is a person enrolled in a post-secondary interior design program. A Student member must make application for Provisional membership within nine months of graduation.

| Membership Process |
|
Membership within the IDA is on an individual basis, not by firm. Any individual wishing to obtain membership with the IDA is required to submit a completed application form along with educational transcripts and references. Student applicants are not required to submit transcripts. The application is reviewed, transcripts are vetted and references checked prior to the application being submitted to the Registrar for final approval. Annual renewal requires proof of liability insurance coverage and fulfillment of currency and continuing education requirements.
Once a member of the IDA, professional development and educational upgrading are tracked and recorded on an annual basis to ensure that the designer is fulfilling the terms of membership.
